Sketchbook of a drunken soul / Musikalische Skizzen, 2008 bis 2017

Sketchbook of a drunken soul / Musical sketches, 2008 – 2017

Fleeting and spontaneous, set lightly on the electronic manuscript paper.
The prompt might be a melody, a rhythm, just a feeling, or moods of the day. These form the basis of the recordings. Mistakes don’t get corrected, because in a sketchbook there are no such things as mistakes.
Any form and harmony is dispensed with. The metre occasionally shifts from 4/4 via 7/8 to 9/8.That often leads to a sense of the unexpected, of the as yet unheard. The sketches, serious as they may sound, have that humour of not taking themsel- ves too seriously. A positive nonchalance sets in. The element of imperfection, of the unpredictable in this interests me especially.
What sounds like pandemonium at rst hearing makes increasing sense the more often you listen.
There is no singing, you won’t nd any choirs or brass sections; but they’re there in the melody line. So that listeners following the guitar melody or the chords become invited to sing along.

Or they can add melodies of their own, in unison or in counterpoint.
Successions of tunes repeat after several variations in a long span. The simultaneity of different melodies and rhythms, which can sound nothing shor t of cacophonous at times, produces a sensation such as we are apt to perceive quite often in our everyday lives.
The titles name the day they come about, though I go on sketching over the sub- sequent days. Except where the name of an additional musician appears in the title, I play all the instruments.
